We Need More Schools Like Cornerstone Prep: Guest Post from Drew Sippel

By Achievement School District

We are thrilled to see these strong academic results with our youngest students, primarily because we know how this early success alters the life trajectory of these kids. They are now not only ahead of their peers academically but they are also confident human beings whose first experience in school is incredibly positive. Parents are also impacted, as they are seeing a new vision of the future for their children that provides them the motivation to continue to support their children’s education. ASD School, Cornerstone Prep, Tops National Assessment

By Achievement School District

Every single student attending Cornerstone Prep School performed at or above grade level on a recent national academic test that measures achievement of elementary school students.
Cornerstone Prep students, 88% of which will be the first in their immediate families to graduate from college and 89% of them qualify for free or reduced lunch programs, proved that students from any background can perform at high levels when given access to great schools and teachers.
“These results provide tangible evidence of what urban students can accomplish when given the right environment,” said Drew Sippel, the Executive Director of Cornerstone Prep. “Students thrive when great teachers engage them effectively and provide challenging work for them in a fast-paced environment. These students will be the future leaders of Memphis.”

This growth will represent 10% of the entire Nashville student population attending grades 5 through 12 and could double the college matriculation rate of low-income students from Nashville.

Insider Thoughts on the ASD Charter Application Review Process

By Achievement School District

The operational autonomy provided to public charter schools seems to attract some people to public education who might not otherwise have gotten involved in this important work: preparing Tennessee children for success in post-secondary education, work and citizenship. It was inspirational to see and hear from people with skills and resources and deep roots in the Memphis community. I am daunted by the task my team was given—to make recommendations to help the ASD decide which of these groups of adults will be trusted to do this work for our children. I am confident in the process the ASD is using and the people it has recruited to help make these decisions.
